This DIY shea butter lip balm recipe creates a rich, smooth balm that helps keep lips soft and moisturized without any unnecessary additives.
It’s quick to make, easy to customize with your favorite essential oils or dried rose petals, and makes a lovely handmade gift too.
If you’d like to learn how to make lip balm with shea butter and coconut oil, follow the simple steps below.
Natural Shea Butter Lip Balm
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon Shea butter
- 1 tablespoon organic Beeswax pellets
- 1 tablespoon solid coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon jojoba oil
- chapstick lip balm tubes or containers
- heat-resistant beaker container
Step-by-Step Tutorial
Fill a pot with water and bring it to a boil.
Place your bowl on top of boiling water to double-boil the ingredients.
Add in Shea butter, beeswax, and coconut oil, and mix while melting.
Once melted, add jojoba oil. Stir all the ingredients thoroughly.
Pour into a lip gloss tube or transfer the mixture using a pipette as a safer alternative.
Please be quick when pouring the lip balm into the containers, as it will harden quickly. If this happens before you finish, heat the lip balm mixture again until it melts completely.
I was able to fill seven lip tubes, like the ones below, with this amount. Increase or decrease the recipe to make as many lip balms as you need.
Can I make this lip balm without beeswax?
Yes, but the texture will be much softer. Even though coconut oil is solid at cooler room temperatures, it melts easily and isn’t firm enough to hold the lip balm together on its own. Beeswax is what gives the balm its solid texture and helps it keep its shape, especially in warmer weather. Without it, the mixture is best stored in a small jar and used as a rich lip butter instead.
Can I add essential oils?
Yes, you can add a few drops of essential oil to give your lip balm a natural scent. Sweet orange, vanilla oleoresin, lavender, and chamomile are popular choices.
Start with 2–4 drops per batch, stir them in after removing the mixture from the heat, and avoid adding too much, as essential oils can irritate the delicate skin on your lips. 2-4 drops will give a pleasant scent without being overpowering.
Lemon, lime, cinnamon, clove, oregano, and wintergreen are best avoided in lip balm because they’re much more likely to irritate the lips.
Peppermint gives a cooling, tingling feeling, but should be used very sparingly.
Making your own shea butter lip balm is a simple way to keep your lips soft while knowing exactly what’s in it.
Once you’ve tried this recipe, it’s easy to experiment with different essential oils or natural additions to create a lip balm that’s just right for you.
