If you want to know how to get rid of split ends without cutting your hair there are several tips, natural solutions, and salon treatments you can try to prevent and repair your damaged split ends.
- When possible let your hair dry naturally
- Keep using heat styling tools to a minimum
- Use a blow dryer nozzle and keep it at a distance from your hair
- Make more use of the cool setting
- Dry your hair with a microfiber towel
- Apply oil on the scalp and hair before you wash it
- Rub a tiny bit of oil on the hair ends after washing
- Don’t overwash your hair
- Use a deep conditioning treatment once a week
- Use a wide-tooth comb to untangle hair. Start with the ends and comb your way to the top. If your hair is long holding it while using the comb will prevent breakage.
- Sleep on silk pillowcases to prevent frizzy hair, hair breakage, and facial wrinkles.
- Avoid using elastic bands made of plastic or rubber. Instead, use hair-friendly elastic bands that can be easily removed.
- Use the recipes below to make your own natural remedies to nourish your hair.
Why Do You Have Split Ends?
Please note that this post contains affiliate links. It means that if you buy through my links I will receive a small compensation at no extra cost to you.
They occur for a number of reasons, but the most common are:
- Heat – Frequent use of hairdryers, irons, and similar tools ends up damaging the hair. If you must use hot tools don’t forget to apply a heat-protectant product.
- Sun – Overexposure to the sun damages the hair and makes it dry. Again use a product to protect your hair from sunlight and a hat.
- Harsh Brushing – Go easy when untangling your hair. If you aren’t careful it could break your hair or split your ends. Using untangling products and wide tooth combs will make it easier.
- Chemical Treatments – Who doesn’t like a change in color or hairstyle? But it comes with a cost. The chemicals used in those treatments make the hair drier. This could lead to damaged hair and split ends. Use a hair repair treatment once or twice a week to lock in moisture.
We all know that the best way to deal with split ends is to trim them. It is the only way to prevent further hair damage.
Regular trims are recommended for a reason. Not only keeps the hair healthier, but it also makes it grow faster and stronger. And this will prevent breakage and split ends. Isn’t that what you want?
Having said that, there are things you can do to prevent and repair split ends before the damage gets too serious.
Let’s start with ways to take care of your hair at home.

DIY Hair Serums and Balm to Repair Split Ends

- Castor oil (2 tablespoons)
- Almond oil (one tablespoon)
- Avocado oil (2 tablespoons)
How to make it and use it:

2. Aloe Vera DIY Hair Serum
I have made a hair serum from this video and I really like it. The only downside is that is in Spanish, but I have translated most of it. You can find the directions below.
Ingredients you need:
You can find the ingredients at Amazon.com
- Vegetal glycerin (3.5 gr)
- Xanthan gum (1 gr)
- Distilled water (30 gr)
- Aloe vera gel (20 gr)
- Jojoba oil or melted coconut oil (10 drops)
- Grapefruit seed extract (10 drops) or all-spectrum preservative.
- Fragrance or preferred essence (5 drops)
How to make it:
To be precise with the measurements you will need a multi-function digital scale.
After measuring all the ingredients, add the Xanthan gum to the glycerin and mix it well.
Now combine the distilled water and aloe vera and stir well.
The next step is to incorporate the distilled water/aloe vera mixture into the glycerin/xanthan mixture. I have used a hand mixer to make sure there are no lumps.
Add 10 drops of jojoba or coconut oil and the fragrance or essential oil of your choice (optional). I have added lavender essential oil. Mix well.
Lastly, add grapefruit seed extract (a natural preservative to make the serum last longer). Alternatively, add a broad-spectrum preservative of your choice.
Transfer to a container with a lid.
The serum has a silky texture similar to the ones you buy in shops.
How to use it:
- Rub the serum between your fingers and apply it to the ends of your hair (a tiny amount is enough).
- Keep it refrigerated to make it last longer.
TIP – The serum is better absorbed when applied over towel-dried hair. It also makes untangling hair easier.

If you are dreaming of longer, healthier, and stronger hair, go and have a trim. The longer you put it off, the more damage you will do to your hair.
Crash diets are also very bad news for hair and health. Use products that are nourishing and eat a hair-friendly diet to strengthen hair from within.
