The size of the pores is mainly due to genetics, so if you have big pores, start blaming your ancestors for them.

Although experts agree that there is no way to reduce the size of your pores, there are actually things you can do to make them appear smaller.

Here are 15 things, according to experts, you can do/use to minimize the appearance of pores:

  1. Exfoliate the skin using salicylic acid
  2. Use a pore refiner toner for your skin type
  3. Facial masks made with clay to absorb excess oil
  4. Don’t wear makeup while you sleep
  5. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen is important
  6. Use retinoids, vitamin C, and Hydroxy Acid products
  7. Apply Niacinamide skincare products
  8. Steam your face once a week
  9. Try a facial
  10. Use a prime
  11. Try micro-needling treatments
  12. Buy non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) foundations
  13. Get a chemical peel
  14. Invest in IPL (intense pulsed light) treatments
  15. Make weekly natural face masks with astringent properties

The American Academy of Dermatology also recommends keeping the skin very clean.

Cleanse your face twice a day
Clogged pores or an oily complexion can make pores look larger. Cleansing twice daily can unclog pores, prevent clogged pores, and reduce oiliness. When cleansing your face, you’ll want to:
Use warm water. Hot water can irritate your skin, causing pores to look larger.
Gently wash your face. Scrubbing can irritate your skin, causing inflammation. When skin is inflamed, pores tend to be more noticeable.
Find a gentle, non-comedogenic cleanser. Again, you want to do everything you can to stop irritating your skin and stop clogging your pores.

How to make it:

Squeeze half the orange juice.

Extract the gel from the aloe vera plant.

This is how to extract aloe vera gel from the plant:

Cut away the end bit of the leaf and leave it for 10 to 15 mins for the yellow liquid to be drained away and wash it clean.
Use a peeler and peel off one side of the skin.
With a knife, make slits horizontally and vertically.
Use a spoon and scoop out the Aloe Vera gel into a bowl.
Put all Aloe Vera bits into a blender and blend at low speed for about 30secs.
Once it turns into a frothy white liquid, pour it into a container and store it in the fridge to keep its freshness. Use within 2 weeks at most.

Another way to drain the yel

If you find that the mixture is too runny, try adding more oatmeal until you get a perfect consistency. On the other hand, if you find that it is too thick to apply it on the face, add more orange juice or a little bit of water.

How to use it

Apply when it is still warm over cleansed skin and leave it for 20 minutes.

Remove it using cotton damped in warm water.

Use it once a week, and remember that the longer you use it, the better the results will be.

If you have any leftovers, keep them in the fridge for no longer than 3 days.

Why Are These Ingredients Effective?

The most effective ingredients to tighten pores are said to be those with astringent properties.

These properties include reducing oil in the skin and unclogging pores.

Orange

The alpha-hydroxy acids present in vitamin C help to exfoliate the skin and minimize the appearance of pores.

Aloe Vera

Its astringent action absorbs excess oil and sebum, so the pores appear less clogged. It has anti-inflammatory properties and speeds up skin healing.

Oatmeal

It is used in many skincare recipes due to its exfoliant properties. It is also an astringent, which is of benefit to oily skin.

Other Pore Tightening Home Remedies

1. Ice Cubes

A woman applies ice cubes on her face to shrink pores

Applying ice to the skin has several skin-care benefits, like helping to tighten pores.

This is because the coldness of the ice improves the flow of blood, helping to temporarily shrink the pores.

To use it, wrap the ice cube on tissue paper or a thin cloth and rub it in circular motions over cleansed skin.

Don’t overuse the icing method, or you could do more harm than good.

TIP – Use green tea to make the ice cubes. Green tea has powerful antioxidant properties, so you will be rubbing away wrinkles and fine lines at the same time.

2. Green Tea

Besides making ice cubes, what are other ways you use green tea to refine pores? Two words: scrub and toner.

DIY Green Tea Scrub To Refine Pores

  • Remove using cold water.
  • If you don’t have jojoba oil, use olive oil or water instead.

DIY Green Tea Toner For Pore Tightening

Ingredients

  • 1 organic chamomile tea bag
  • 2 organic green tea bags
  • water

How to make it

  • Make a chamomile tea infusion and a green tea infusion.
  • Mix the two of them and leave them to cool down.
  • Transfer to a container such as a spray bottle and keep it refrigerated.
  • Keep it for no longer than 2 or 3 days.
  • If you want the toner to last longer you need to add a preservative.
