Homemade Face Cream With Shea Butter & Essential Oils

shea butter face cream recipe

I have a homemade face cream with Shea butter (whipped) that I have made for myself using only natural ingredients.

Since I love natural stuff I make my own lotions and potions with ingredients I know are effective to treat the skin.

I have combination skin and only apply a tiny amount on the drier areas of my face.

If your skin is oily I don’t think the combination of Shea butter and oils is good for this type of skin.

I would recommend using it only on the body and neck.

This DIY Shea butter moisturizer has other skin benefits that you can find below the recipe.

How To Make Your Own DIY Shea Butter Cream

Make sure you have the ingredients ready before you start.

Ingredients you need:

Do I need to add a preservative?

Cosmetic products need to be preserved in order to prevent microbial spoilage that would make the product unsafe for consumers.
Preservatives play a very important function in products containing water: they kill microorganisms and water-borne bacteria, and prevent the growth of bacteria, mold and yeast. If a product contains water (including hydrosols, floral water and aloe vera juice, all of which contain water), a preservative is essential to help prevent microbes growing.

So, in this recipe, we don’t need to add a preservative because we are not using water.

How to Make It:

  1. Melt the Shea butter in a double boiler or bain-marie.

How to Use It:

This cream goes a long way so you only need a small amount.

Take a small amount with a spatula and rub it between your fingers.

Apply over your face and neck with a gentle massage.

Use morning and/or night.

It should last a few months but be careful not to put water on it. Keep it in a dark place.

Is Your DIY Facial Cream Too Greasy?

If you find that sometimes the creams or lotions you make at home are too greasy is time to add oil-absorbing ingredients.

Oil-absorbing ingredients are especially good for those who have oily skin or to prevent the skin from being too shiny after applying the cream.

Some of the best oil-absorbing ingredients are:

  • corn starch
  • arrowroot powder
  • clay
  • rice starch
  • charcoal
  • tapioca starch

Another way to make sure your homemade creams are not too greasy is to use fast-absorbing carrier oils.

I am going to try this recipe out tonight. But I know that citrus EO’s shouldn’t be used on skin who is in direct contact to sun, so what would you use to substitute the orange EO?

    1. You could leave the chamomile out or if you really want a substitute, lavender or frankincense essential oils are good choices.

Thank you Bianca for your tips! I love Shea butter.
