Homemade Orange Sugar Scrub Recipe
Ingredients
- 250 gr granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 20 drops of orange essential oil
- 1 tbsp dried orange peel (optional)
- pinch of cosmetic-grade orange mica powder (optional)
You can use fresh orange zest if you are making a small amount, but if you want the scrub to last, use dried orange peel.
A quick way to dry orange peel is in the oven.
Place the peels in the oven at low heat until they lose all their moisture.
Directions
In a bowl combine the sugar with the coconut oil and olive oil.
Stir well and add 15 or 20 drops of orange essential oil and blend well into the mixture.
Then, add a pinch of orange mica power, if you are using it.
It will give a subtle orange tone to the scrub.
Now add a tablespoon of dried orange peel.
Blend all the ingredients together and transfer them to an airtight container.
Keep it in a dry place (not close to water), away from direct sunlight and heat.

Safety
Always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil before use and never use undiluted.
Don’t use it if you are pregnant without consulting a doctor.
Make sure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients used to make the scrub.
How to use it
Don’t introduce your wet fingers into the scrub, use a spoon or spatula instead.
Scoop a generous amount and rub it on the body in circular motions.
Rinse with warm water. You can use it before or after your shower/bath.
I like to use the scrub after applying the shower gel because it leaves the skin moisturized and I don’t need to apply body cream.
How long will this DIY orange sugar scrub last?
It should be good for at least 6 months as long as you don’t introduce water into the scrub.
Will it clog the drains?
I’m not an expert, but on this forum, a licensed master plumber states that running cold or hot water will be enough to melt the coconut oil.
But, if you are still worried, an idea is to rinse the scrub inside a bucket.
Personally, I haven’t had any problem with the shower drain, besides this recipe uses a small quantity of coconut oil.
And, if you are worried about the orange peels blocking the drains make sure you are using a sink strainer for the bathtub.

Orange Essential Oil Skin Benefits
Essential oils can be extracted from the rind of an orange, and these oils have proven to be valuable allies in the quest for healthy skin.
Below are some of the ways in which orange essential oils can give you happier skin.
1. Reduces dark spots and blemishes
Vitamin C contains a property that inhibits your skin’s melanin production, melanin being the pigment that can cause dark spots if too much of it is produced in a particular area of the skin.
With continued use, orange essential oils can both treat dark spots and prevent them from forming in the first place.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps to boost the skin’s natural regeneration process, repairing damaged skin cells and preventing blemishes.
2. Prevents premature skin aging
As we age the skin becomes drier, thinner, and less elastic. This will eventually lead to wrinkles – it’s inevitable.
The vitamin C from orange essential oils will target skin cells to directly boost collagen and elastin, which will keep your skin firm and supple, reducing lines and wrinkles.
3. Fights and prevents acne
Acne occurs when your sebaceous glands produce too much oil and clog your pores, causing a bacteria named Propionibacterium acnes to develop.
This results in acne, and once the bacteria has taken root it can be hard to nullify.
Orange essential oil, however, contains antiseptic properties that help to prevent the bacteria from forming or spreading further.
It also combats the inflammatory nature of the bacteria, reducing redness and swelling.
4. Boosts circulation
Poor circulation can occur at any time, particularly in the winter months when our blood vessels constrict and our organs claim the lion’s share of blood flow in order to keep ticking.
It’s a clever survival strategy that our bodies employ, but it can leave us with pale, blotchy, and puffy-looking skin.
Vitamin C offers a solution to this particular winter woe, since it helps in maintaining the tone of blood vessels, thus promoting good circulation to all areas of the body, including the skin.
5. Helps keep skin moisturized
Dry skin feels uncomfortable and can lead to complications such as peeling and even certain health conditions such as eczema.
Vitamin C can prevent trans-epidermal water loss, keeping the skin moisturized and combating dryness, meaning your face can maintain that firm dewy feel all year round and stay healthy
6. Fights free radicals
No matter how careful you are, free radicals will inevitably find their way onto your skin.
Free radicals can damage your skin cells through the process of oxidation, and this can lead to skin complications.
Vitamin C, being an antioxidant, can stop free radicals in their tracks, meaning that orange essential oils provide an effective method of preventing skin damage.
