DIY coffee and coconut oil scrub cubes

It is made with 3 simple ingredients you likely have at home or can easily find.

I have added a few drops of lemongrass essential oil, but this is, of course, optional.

I have made this scrub in cube form because I find it easier to use and more hygienic, but you can make it the usual way if you prefer.

Below the recipe, you will find the benefits of popular questions and answers about using this particular scrub.

Let’s make it!

How to make coffee scrub cubes

Although I love making coffee (for the aroma) and drinking it (to kick-start the day), I don’t use brewed coffee grounds to make my scrubs.

Why?

To prevent the water in the coffee grinds from contaminating the scrub with bacteria.

If you must use coffee grounds, I recommend placing them in the oven to dry for at least half an hour.

This way, the water will evaporate, and your scrub will remain contamination-free as long as you keep it away from water.

I prefer to use ground coffee that hasn’t been brewed.

Coffee Coconut Oil Sugar Scrub recipe

Ingredients

  • 100 gr coconut oil
  • one tablespoon of ground coffee
  • 200 gr granulated white or brown sugar
  • 15 drops of essential oil (optional)
  • silicone molds

This amount fills 2 molds of this size.

How to make it

Combine the white sugar with the coffee grounds.

Stir, then, if using, add 15 drops of lemongrass essential oil or another essential oil of your choice.

I have added lemongrass essential oil because it has a strong scent that helps mask the overpowering smell of coconut oil.

Don’t add essential oil if you enjoy coconut fragrance.

Finally, add the melted coconut oil and stir well.

How To Use Scrub Cubes

One cube is usually enough for the whole body.

Sometimes the cubes are a bit hard when stored in the fridge.

If this is the case, crumble it slightly with your fingers, then rub it over wet skin in circular motions.

Rinse it off with warm water and shower as usual.

The skin is left moisturized, polished, and smooth.

Use once or twice a week.

When using products containing oils, it is recommended to use a bath mat to avoid slips.

And don’t forget to clean the shower floor after using an oil-based scrub.

7 Popular Q&A

1. Does coffee scrub clog drains?

It is said that coffee grounds are bad news for drains:

Plain and simple, it’s best to avoid putting coffee grounds down the drain. Coffee grounds are among the biggest drain clogging offenders, along with fats, oil, and grease.

Source

Personally, I never had a problem with coffee grounds clogging the drains, but if you worry about this, you could use a drain grate or mesh to cover the drain’s opening.

Also, don’t go overboard with the coffee grounds. I only add one tablespoon to the entire recipe and use it once a week.

2. Can coconut oil clog the drains?

Again, I have never had a problem using coconut oil in the shower, but I only use it once a week.

If you are concerned, run hot water down the drain after using oils in the shower/bath.

Alternatively, you can use a different oil. I like almond or Apricot kernel oils.

3. Can you use a coffee scrub on your face?

There is conflicting advice on whether to use any facial scrub.

If you want to learn more, read this article.

Personally, I prefer using scrubs on my face, but I always check that the ingredients are gentle on the skin.

I never exfoliate the face more than once a week, and when I do, I make sure to rub with care so I don’t irritate the skin.

Coffee grounds are slightly abrasive, so I wouldn’t use a coffee scrub on the face; use it only on the body.

4. Is a coffee scrub good for your skin?

The immediate benefits of using a coffee scrub include softer, more moisturized, and polished skin.

Studies show that the antioxidants in coffee protect the skin from oxidative damage and may delay skin aging.

Additionally, caffeine in coffee can temporarily help tighten the skin.

5. Can I use a coffee scrub every day?

Because coffee grounds are mildly abrasive, they are not recommended for daily use.

Once or twice a week is more than enough.

If you prefer to use body scrubs every day, make one that incorporates gentle skin-care ingredients, such as oatmeal and honey.

6. How do you preserve coffee scrub?

Scrubs made only with oils don’t need a preservative. However, if the coffee scrub will be exposed to water, you will need to add a preservative to prevent bacterial growth.

This is one of the reasons I like to make scrub cubes using ground coffee straight from the bag.

Don’t keep your homemade scrubs near water, and don’t put your wet fingers inside the jar to avoid contamination.

It is good practice to store them in an airtight container in the fridge.

7. Can you use instant coffee in coffee scrubs?

Yes, you can use instant coffee, but you won’t get the exfoliating benefits of coffee grounds because, as soon as you add oil to the recipe, the coffee will dissolve.

But you can try making the scrub with sugar, instant coffee, and honey instead of oil.

In fact, I made it myself to check the result.

I have used:

  • 50 gr granulated white sugar
  • 5 gr instant coffee
  • 10 gr honey

How to Make Them

  • Combine sugar and instant coffee, and add the honey
  • don’t overmix
  • place in molds and in the freezer for a few minutes (10 or 15)
  • Part of the coffee granules was dissolved, but not all

These coffee scrubs without oil are more difficult to mix.

They are also sticky and drier than the ones I made with coconut oil, but they exfoliate the skin really well, leaving it super soft. It’s best to keep them in an airtight container and refrigerated.

I hope you enjoy these DIY coffee scrubs.

If you like coffee, you will love the smell!
