Here is a popular DIY Japanese rice face mask recipe that I have recently made.
The texture is super-smooth and so rich that it feels really luxurious.
If you love rice you are going to love it even more after you experience the awesome benefits it has on the skin.
More on the benefits below.
It is well known that Oriental women, including Japanese and Korean, take good care of their skin, and rice masks form part of their beauty routine.
Perhaps they have to thank the humble rice for their porcelain complexion?
Homemade masks, toners, and scrubs made with rice have great benefits for the skin.
These are some of its skincare benefits:
- eliminate dead cells
- moisturize
- rejuvenate
- regenerate
- firm
- brighten and whiten
- clear the skin
A few notes about the recipe:
- I have added a full-spectrum preservative to all 4 products because of the water content.
- Even if kept in the fridge it will soon grow bacteria and I don’t want those nasties on my skin.
- If you don’t want to use a preservative make only the amount you are going to need for one or two applications.
- Sterilize the containers with alcohol (70%) and use a spatula instead of your fingers.

4 Homemade Rice Skin Care Products
I have made four skincare products using rice and water as the main ingredients.
Not too bad eh?
Let’s see how to make a DIY rice mask for the face, a skin toner, and two scrubs.
These are, what I like to call, my “fab” four.
Ingredients to make the toner and face mask:
- 1 cup of rice
- 3 cups of water
How to make rice toner
First, we are going to make the toner. Boil the rice and water for just 5 minutes.
Strain half a cup of water to make the rice toner.
Wait until it cools and transfer it to a bottle.
I have added one tablespoon of homemade rose water.
This is, of course, optional but if you want to add it, check how to make rose water at home.
Another way to make the toner is by leaving the rice with water for a few hours or overnight.
Strain the rice and keep the water in a bottle and in the fridge.
Apply with cotton or keep it in a spray bottle and spray over the face and neck.
DIY Anti-Aging Cooked Rice Face Mask | Serum Recipe
Now let’s make the facial mask or serum.
Keep boiling the rice until is soft but make sure is not completely dry.
Now blend it until it looks like a puree.
Put the boiled rice on a cheesecloth, pantyhose, or a small net washing bag (like me), and squeeze it to get a gel-like liquid.
This is how the rice water face mask looks.
Note – Don’t throw the rice left in the strainer, reserve it to make the scrub.
Transfer the rice mask to a container.
You can use it as it is, or you could add other ingredients to maximize its benefits.
I have added 1 tablespoon of vitamin E, 10 drops of rosehip oil, and half a teaspoon of DMAE powder.
I have also added a full-spectrum preservative because it contains water.
If you don’t want to use a preservative make a small amount, keep it in the fridge, and use it within two or 3 days.
How to use the rice facial mask
Apply over the face and neck and leave until it gets dry (about 10 or 15 minutes).
Remove with plenty of warm water or rose water.
The skin will be clear and super-smooth. You can apply it to your hands too.
Homemade Rice Scrubs
The last 2 products we are going to make are the scrubs.
DIY rice smooth scrub recipe

Add one chamomile tea bag and mix it.
You could also add a green tea bag or similar.

This rice scrub is very gentle on the skin.

Hi! I’ve been looking all over for someone who tried this. Have you tested how long the rice mask, toner, and scrub last?
Hi,
I can’t tell you for sure how long they will last because all 4 products contain a broad-spectrum preservative to prevent the growth of bacteria. It is best to make a small amount and use it within 2 or 3 days. Keep it refrigerated for best results. Sterilize the containers with alcohol (70%) and use a spatula instead of your fingers. I hope this helps. Thanks.
hello! what type of preservative do you suggest putting in the rice mask please? so that it will last longer, in the fridge or out… thanks!
Hi,
You need to use a broad spectrum preservative. Good options include Germall® Plus, Leucidal liquid SF or Naticide. If you need more information about preservatives check this article.
I like to keep them in the fridge and if is too cold (like in winter), I just warm it for few seconds in the microwave.
I hope this helps.
