How to Make Lip Balm Without Beeswax

homemade lip balm no beeswax

If you ever wanted to know how to make lip balm without beeswax, I have the recipe for you.

It’s what you will call a vegan lip balm because all ingredients used are of plant origin.

Lip balms are usually made with beeswax to give texture and consistency, but there are other vegetable ingredients that also serve to achieve the same effect and give a similar texture to the balm.

I have used soy wax which is a vegan alternative to beeswax.

Cocoa butter is another ingredient that we find often in this type of cosmetic.

I like it because is rich in emollients which keep the lips smoother and moisturized.

And I also love the delicious smell of cocoa!

But if you don’t, buy deodorized cocoa butter like this one.

If you don’t like soy wax check this article to find vegan wax alternatives.

DIY Orange and Mint Cocoa Butter Lip Balm

This all-natural lip balm is made with orange and peppermint essential oils for a smooth, uplifting, and refreshing effect on the lips.

I have made this design using an insert in the center of the container.

Customize it to your taste by changing the colors, ingredients, oils, or/and cutter shapes.

Or you can skip the heart altogether and make the lip balm just one tone.

Ingredients you will need:

Heart insert

  • I have used 100 gr cocoa butter like this one to make the heart but you can change it to whatever amount suits your needs.
  • cosmetic-grade orange colorant
  • sweet orange essential oil (10 drops) (get it here)

For the rest of the lip balm

This amount is enough to fill about 4 lip balm containers similar to these ones.

How to make it:

To make the heart you need a heart-shaped silicon mold similar to this one.

If you don’t have a shaped heart mold you can use any other shape you like.

Measuring Shea butter on a scale

To start, melt the cocoa butter in a double boiler or water bath and add orange colorant and orange essential oil.

Melting Shea butter and adding essential oil

Pour it into the mold and place it in the fridge.

Once it has hardened is ready to unmold.

Next, we are going to make the rest of the balm.

We begin by melting soy wax and Shea butter in a water bath.

Melting soy wax and Shea butter

Once melted add almond oil and vitamin E and stir.

Then add green colorant and peppermint essential oil.

Stir again to make sure all the ingredients are well incorporated.

Combining the rest of the ingredients

Place the cocoa hearts in the center of an empty container and with a dropper add the melted Shea butter and soy wax mixture.

Adding melted Shea butter to glass containers

Place them in the freezer until they are set (5 minutes approx.).

Your lip balms are ready to use.

Enjoy!

If you don’t have any cutter shape at home you could improvise by using a lip balm, just like in the pictures below.

Or for a simple lip balm make it two layers in different colors.

These lip balms are packed with antioxidants and vitamins like E and A.

They are highly moisturizing and will prevent dry and cracked lips.

It is also said that peppermint essential oil helps stimulate blood circulation making the lips appear temporarily fuller.

It will last from 6 months to one year if kept in a cool dark place.
