Easy Homemade Salve Recipe to Relieve Eczema

homemade salve recipe eczema

I made this homemade salve recipe as an experiment to see if it could relieve my eczema.

I have a small eczema patch underneath my right armpit and it is very itchy, especially when I apply deodorant.

I have tried prescription creams with steroids but they did nothing for my problem and this is why I decided to make my own balm.

I started researching ingredients that are believed to be effective in helping inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

Sunflower seed oil applied topically appears to have some very favorable properties in terms of itch, inflammation, and improvement of the skin barrier function. Coconut oil has antibacterial effects, which may also be of great benefit in eczema.

Here are some of the ingredients I found:

  • honey
  • sunflower oil
  • coconut oil
  • lavender
  • shea butter
  • Jojoba oil
  • beeswax
  • thyme
  • calendula oil
  • rose essential oil
  • German chamomile essential oil
  • eucalyptus essential oil

I picked ingredients I had at home at that moment and went with the ones below:

Ingredients you need:

Note that Bergamot oil is photosensitive so is best to use it only at night or use a substitute such as sandalwood or frankincense essential oils.

Wait for a few hours until the balm hardens.

If you keep it in the fridge it will harden more quickly.

Eczema salve in a container

Transfer to a container and is ready to use!

Remember to sterilize the container before use. It is important to avoid the development of bacteria.

I clean all the containers using rubbing alcohol. It is also important to scoop the cream using a clean spatula as opposed to using your fingers.

DIY eczema salve

How to use it:

I make a conscious effort to apply the balm at least 3 times a day to the area even if is not itchy.

Before I used to apply the eczema creams only when it was itching and then I scratched so hard that it made it worst.

Since using this salve I have noticed that the area where my eczema is, feels more moisturized, less dry, and also less itchy.

Probably it won’t be a definite cure, but anything that helps to make it more bearable is good.

Make sure you test the balm first and check that you are not allergic to the ingredients, especially essential oils. If in doubt, pregnant or nursing consult your doctor.

  1. Hi! Thanks for sharing. I tried the recipe to a T and when I took it out of the fridge and left it out for a day it turned to liquid again. Do you have any suggestions?

    1. H Malissa,

Sorry about that. It could be due to hot weather. I haven’t had that issue because I keep it refrigerated. I have been thinking about this, and I have decided to update the recipe to include beeswax so it has a more solid consistency. I will keep you informed. Thanks for stopping by.
