I like painting glass jars with acrylic paint but you can use chalk or spray paint. Paint each jar with your chosen color and allow the paint to dry completely.

Once the first layer has dried, paint a second layer.

And a third layer if required. The brush strokes become less visible as you keep adding paint coats. I like them because it adds to the rustic style, but if you don’t want brush strokes at all your best chance is to use spray paint.

Cut a piece of burlap long enough to wrap around the jar. Wrap the burlap around the middle of the jar and glue the ends together. This will be the back of the jar.

I have painted the wooden hearts in white but you choose a different color or leave them as they are.

DIY Mason Jars Q & A

In more recent history, Mason jars are not just for practical use, but decorative, as well.

They’ve been known to be excellent pots for small herbs, light fixtures, candle votives, and organizational holders. Crafters have enjoyed the functionality and cuteness of a Mason jar.

One common way that people have found to make the jars more unique to their projects, is by painting them!

Let me give you some great tips to make your next paint project successful.

We’ll have your guests in awe of the versatility and beauty of your creations with these cute painted Mason jars!

Below, we’ll cover the best kinds of products, methods, and common questions you might have about painting Mason jars.

1. Best Paint for Mason Jars

You may be finding yourself thinking, “Isn’t glass a bit too slippery to paint?”

For some paints, that could be true, but thankfully we have a variety of incredible paints that will be useful to paint your glass jars and will keep your creation looking lovely for a long time to come!

Painting a mason jar may be accomplished using a variety of paints:

Acrylic Paint

Acrylic Enamel Paint: This paint is an acrylic base with an enamel finish.

It is truly a great combination for painting Mason jars because acrylic paint has the ability to stick to many surfaces –including glass!– and the enamel in the paint dries with a hardened and smooth exterior layer.

This leaves your paint color lasting and protected on your Mason jar.

Acrylic Glass Paint: Acrylic glass paints are solely acrylic based (aka. no enamel).

Acrylic is a water-based paint, which doesn’t always keep it as secure as the previous paint mentioned, but acrylic glass paints are different in that they have chemicals added to the acrylic base to make the paint last longer and adhere well to glass items.

Just be sure that you’re specifically getting acrylic glass paint, as regular acrylics may not stay as long.

Chalk Paint

Chalk paint is a technique for painting furniture pieces and other objects with a mixture of paint and plaster of Paris. The mixture is rubbed onto the surface to create a rough, chalky finish. Chalk paint can be used on both light and dark surfaces, but must be applied in many thin layers.

Spray Paint (which can be acrylic, chalkboard, enamel, etc.)

Can you spray paint Mason jars?

Yes, you can.

Spray paint is a can of paint that is applied to surfaces with a small nozzle.

To use spray paint, shake it and slowly move it back and forth in order to get a continuous, even coat of paint.

Don’t forget to put newspaper or cardboard down to protect whatever surface you’re working on.

It is also recommended to spray your glass jars outside and if possible wear a mask to protect you from the fumes.

Now that you know what paint to use on Mason jars is time to pick the color.

Colors

There are many colors you may use to decorate your mason jar for autumn, including pastels and any other color you want, as long as it is appropriate for the season, which in this case, is fall.

Now that you have your perfect paint picked out for your Mason jar’s desired outcome, let’s talk about methods.

There are a few ways to paint your glass Mason jar, and it all depends on how you’d like it to turn out.

2. How to paint glass jars with acrylic paint or chalk paint

Painting glass jars with acrylic paint or chalk paint is an easy process. The first step in any method is to prep your jar.

  • Start by giving it a good scrub with warm, soapy water.
  • Make sure that you’ve gotten any potential grime or residue off of your Mason jar.
  • Then, let it dry completely before painting.
  • When you start handling your clean jar, it’s a good idea to wear latex gloves. This will keep your hand’s natural oils from getting on the glass under the paint.
  • It is recommended to rub alcohol or vinegar onto the glass after it’s cleaned.
  • Let air dry completely.
  • Apply the first coat of paint to your mason jar with a paintbrush. Use consistent vertical strokes and ensure that you paint in the same direction across the jar.
  • You can choose any kind of brush to apply your paint and come out with a beautiful look. Brushes with synthetic bristles will leave your jar with more noticeable or apparent strokes and natural-bristle brushes will give you a much smoother finish. Sponges might give a more textured, frosted look to your jar. If you’re using markers or pens, then obviously don’t worry about brushes.
  • Some people find it easier to paint the jars by turning them upside down. This is especially important if you need to paint the bottom of the jar.
  • Make sure to allow time for the first coat to dry before applying the second coat.
  • Continue applying paint coats until you are satisfied with the color. Keep the mason jars in a well-ventilated area at all times while painting them.
  • If you make any mistakes, dip a cotton swab in acetone (or nail polish remover) and erase any work you may not want to keep.
  • If you want to distress the paint use a tiny piece of sandpaper, and rub the top of the jar and the edges in a circular motion. Another way to get a distressed appearance is to gently wipe the paint on the surface in different areas of the jar.
  • You can experiment with various distressing techniques to discover which appearance you like best.
  • If you are going to use the mason jars outside, it is recommended to apply a paint sealer. Make sure to remove the dust that forms when sanding the paint or the dust will become permanently adhered to the painted surface.

3. Do I Need to Prime Mason Jars Before Painting?

While a primer is not completely necessary, it will enhance the quality of your work. It will also help the paint to bind to the glass much longer than if not.

4. Do I Need to Seal Mason Jars After Painting?

It is not absolutely necessary unless you are going to keep them outside. But if you want to seal your jars there are two possible ways.

Be sure to check the packaging of the paints that you choose to use.

One method is using heat. Just pop your beautiful piece in the oven after brushing on your sealant.

The next method is spray sealing. This is seen as a more convenient method, as you spray your clear sealant on your work and it’s ready to use after 24 hours!

5. How to Tie Twine Around Mason Jars

Take a length of twine and tape it to each side of your mason jar, leaving a tail at either end for tying.

Next, take your spool of twine and wrap it over the rim of the jar.

When you are satisfied with the outcome, snip the twine at both ends and make a knot out of each end of the twine that is hanging loose.
