DIY Mason Jar Wall Sconce

A wall sconce is by definition a light fixture, but in today’s world, a DIY sconce can be used as a decorative flower vase, to organize small items in a decorative way, and to add sparkle with faux candles or fairy lights.

Creating this mason jar wall sconce is not difficult, but it does require some time and effort.

It is a DIY wood sign, a mason jar sconce or flower vase, and a key holder that can be customized to suit your personality.

Follow these steps to create this lovely DIY Mason jar sconce:

Supplies for the whole project

  • Wooden board
  • Stencil of your choice
  • Mason jar or any other jar you want to use
  • Paint (optional, only if you want to paint the Mason jar)
  • Wood stain (optional)
  • Sandpaper (optional, only if you want a distressed look)
  • Repositionable glue spray
  • Twine string
  • Faux or fresh flowers, fairy lights, or faux candle
  • Key hooks (optional, only if you want to make a key holder)
  • Drill

Directions

This project is divided into 3 steps.

  1. Make a sign with a stencil
  2. Make a Mason jar sconce with fairy lights or a flower vase
  3. Attach the key hooks

1. Making the Sign

For this part of the project, you need a wooden board, wood stain, a stencil, Mod Podge, a paintbrush, and chalk paint. Alternatively, you can use acrylic paint or spray paint.

Do this step if you want to stain your wood board.

To stain the wooden board with a natural stain, start by sanding the board and wiping it clean with a wet cloth.

Apply the stain in the direction of the wood grain, and be sure to wait until it dries in case you want to apply a second coat.

I have chosen to apply just one coat.

Distressing the Wooden Board (Optional)

One way to distress a wooden board is to sand it with sandpaper. The sandpaper will remove some of the top layers of the wood, revealing the grain of the wood, and making it look more aged.

Stenciling the Wooden Board

Spray repositionable glue to the back of the stencil and place it on the board in your chosen spot.

Repositionable glue is great because it holds the stencil in place and at the same time, makes it easy to reposition the stencil in case you need it.

To prevent the stencil from bleeding into the wood, I like to use Mod Podge. Simply soak a brush with Mod Podge and brush it all over the stencil.

Wait until it dries before painting it.

Once it dries, apply a layer of your preferred paint.

I like to use a sponge brush but you can also use a makeup sponge or a paintbrush.

Press the sponge onto the surface of the wood, and then pull it off to create a thin, even coat of paint.

Applying white chalk paint to top of stencil

I have used white chalk paint for my sign. Wait until it is completely dry before applying a second layer.

This is how the sign looks after two layers of paint. If you don’t like the gaps in the words, use a thin paintbrush to fill them in.

2. Mason or Glass Jar

For this part, you will need a Mason jar or glass jar, paint, paintbrush, sandpaper (optional), and twine string.

First, coat the jar with a layer of paint, making sure to paint areas like the top and bottom of the jar. Wait until the paint dries and give it one or two more coats of paint.

To distress a mason jar, start by sanding the glass with a rough grade of sandpaper.

Try not to press too hard, but focus on going in circular motions around the outside of the glass.

Stop once you’re satisfied with the distressed look of your Mason jar.

Next, tie a string around the neck of the Mason jar. Make sure to leave two long ends like in the image below.

How to attach Mason jars to wood

Follow this simple way to attach a Mason jar to wood. Even if I think is simple you still will need to drill two holes into the wood.

Place the glass jar where you want it to hang and mark both of the upper sides with a pencil, just behind the jar.

At the same time, you can drill two holes in both sides of the upper corners where you will insert a string to hang the wooden board.

To attach the Mason jar to the board insert the two sides of the string through the holes, tightly knotting it behind the board.

I have glued the back of the glass jar to better secure it to the board and I added some command strips to secure the twine string to the back of the board.

3. Attaching the Key Hooks

This step is of course optional. Don’t add the hooks if you don’t like them.

Position the key hooks where you want to drill the holes and make a mark with a pencil.

Screw the key hooks in place.

The last step is to place a bunch of flowers or fairy lights into the jar.
