When making DIY bath bombs for kids is better to go for mild essential oils.
It is important to use ingredients that are friendly to kids’ skin and eyes.
There are a few things to consider when using bath bombs with kids (and adults too):
- Make sure your children are not allergic to any of the ingredients used in the recipes.
- The oils in the bath bombs make the bath slippery so be extra careful and don’t allow them to stand up.
- Use a bathmat
- Clean the bath after using bath bombs to get rid of all traces of oil.
Do keep in mind that we suggest not using essential oils in the bath of children under the age of 2. Just a plain epsom salt bath is nice for their tender skin, or you can use hydrosols, or a sock full of herbs, like lavender. If you do decide to use them for children over age 2, please be sure you are using essential oils safe for children.

Making bath bombs with kids is a fun activity that will keep them busy for a while.
Get some cute molds and let them use their imagination to come up with their own creations.
Here are three of my favorite bath bombs for kids made with essential oils such as lavender, grapefruit, and chamomile that are considered safe for children.
1. DIY Kids Friendly Grapefruit Bath Bomb
These bath bombs smell REALLY good!
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 1/4 cup cream of tartar
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1/4 cup Epsom salt
- 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil
- 8 drops of grapefruit essential oil
- water (spray bottle)
- bath bomb molds
I have made 4 bath bombs with these ingredients.
The size of the molds is 45mm (2 bath bombs) and 55mm (2 bath bombs). These molds are very similar to the ones I used.
How to Make it:
Mix dry ingredients in one bowl and stir well to break all the clumps.
Add the oils to the mixture and mix slowly.
Spray water (just one or two sprays at a time) into the mixture and stir.
I use my hands and sometimes gloves (with citric acid recipes).
The mix is ready when you squeeze it and it holds together.
Fill both halves of the bath bomb molds and press them together.
Remove the bath bombs from the molds and allow them to dry.
READY TO USE!

2. Cute Homemade Almond & Lavender Bath Bombs
I wanted to try something different for these bath bombs, so I used a plastic pot from a cream caramel dessert (flan) I had at home.
The results are cute bath bombs that look good enough to eat.
Ingredients:
- baking soda – 1 cup
- cream of tartar – 1/4 cup
- pink Himalayan salt – 1/4 cup
- non-scented sweet almond oil – 2 tablespoons
- lavender essential oil – 1 teaspoon
- pink food coloring (optional)
- a spray bottle with water
How to Make it:
- Mix almond oil and lavender essential oil in a bowl.
- In another bowl, mix the cream of tartar, pink Himalayan salt, and baking soda.
- Add the oil solution to the salt, soda, and cream of the tartar mixture.
Add water (one spray at a time) and mix until you get a texture similar to moist sand. It is best to use your hands.
I made a few bath bombs without food coloring and then added pink coloring to the mixture.
Fill the mold with the mixture and press with your fingers.
Remove the bath bomb from the mold and let it dry. Tap lightly on the mold if it gets stuck.
These bath bombs are fun to make with kids and smell really good. It will help your kids relax before bedtime.
3. DIY Oatmeal & Citric Acid Bath Bomb for Older Kids
I have used bath bomb molds and egg plastic containers to make this batch.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup citric acid
- 1/2 cup oatmeal (ground)
- 1/4 cup Epsom salt
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil (melted)
- 1 tablespoon Chamomile essential oil
- food coloring (optional)
- water in a spray bottle
How to Make it:
Mix the dry ingredients in one bowl and stir well to break all the clumps.
Add the oils into the mixture and mix slowly. If you are using food coloring add it to the oils and then add one spoon of water.
Add the oils to the dry ingredients little by little and mix well. If the mixture needs more moisture, spray some water until you get a similar texture to the image below. Make sure it holds together when you squeeze it.
Fill in the molds and press down with your fingers. Remove the bath bombs from the molds and allow them to dry.
